Patrick DELORME:
An Artist Replete With Spirits!

To cap off their work, artists of an earlier age never failed to solicit their Muses. But with disbelief having invaded all the arts today, one no longer encounters any requisite homage to ones Benefactors except on the title pages of classic writings. Modern creative works --- should we deplore this truth? --- hardly ever invoke the aid of our inspiration. And yet we find a certain Patrick DELORME, who contradicts that fact, for his works are strongly inspired.

His visions, in which sometimes bloodless and transparent outlines are drawn from subterranean rocks, where sometimes hosts of pilgrims follow a new Moses, are filled with surprises. Are they not, however, most familiar evocations of our collective beliefs?

The eschatological myths, the distant planets, the limpid worlds that Patrick DELORME paints convey the outer limits of our future universe as well as the primordial past of its origins.

It is hardly surprising that the restrained gamut of colors he uses, reflects the ancient theory of the four elements : water, earth, air, fire. Nor is surprising to see these paintings reflect the experiments of spiritual mediums.

It is a given: DELORME is a visionary painter. Except for the biblical frescos and canvases in which the themes respond with precision to esoteric traditions, certain of his works evoke an imperious need for exaltation, revealing a spiritual character but also one of sentiment. The color blue, rapture and transparence brought together, form the archetype of the eternal female; this is how, throughout the centuries, the Virgin Mary has been depicted.

And Theophile Gautier imagined, in one his novels, a personage whose mystic turn of fortune with his Muse Spirite, does not fail to put us in mind of the Works of our artist. What great misfortune must have overtaken the sentimental soul of this inventor of myths in order that, far from the human world, his heart became enmeshed in the complex maze of the hereafter in its search for an astral sister soul?

PATRICK DELORME by Robert Pujade

Showers of light, earthquakes, waves of colour or flames of shadow & ruins, these are the plastic flares that Patrick Delorme uses to compose, to reveal an unknown universe, invisible, but flowering on each surface that shines.

Strange creatures come forth apparently from the sole gesture of painting & the place they live. There is a world which comes back as from a far off premonition. The writs of Dante, our childhood where this inexplicable

world in other circumstances & other beliefs, rubbed shoulders with Gustave Moreau & William Blake.

This is purgatory, the last sentences or the processions of souls, the threats of prophets or the appearance of angels

who discover by working the material like these shapes that half-sleep reveals between powers of a painting or marks on a wall.

Inseperable from a life's experience & a regard taken from the uncanny, Patrick Delorme's work appears at times, similar to the instantaneous relation of the photographic vision. As in a photograph, the spectacle of his paintings depend on what the artist sees at the moment he looks. All his art is to explore the material that he applies to the canvas with knife, brush, sponge, until under the effect of his motions , are freed the forms similar to those which obsess him. Each of his gests designs the opacity of a coloured surface, clearing it, obscuring it, & opening it & each

finished part of the painting corresponds to the coincidence between what he finds & what he aims at without premeditation. The result is a direct photograph of the apparitions.

By the force of his inspiration, Patrick Delorme cohabits with contemporary art but his style encircles, precedes & overtakes it because since the beginning, his work explores the limits of the appearance where the vision decides on its proper boundaries. Renewing & breaking unceasingly with the sacred old times, this work integrates the actual technique & space in order to discover the scene of a virtual liturgy within our reach: it compels the colour to liberate an invisible universe, but which is present in the shapes & depths of his works.
